Jeff Skinner
Before I get started on what interests me about Jeff Skinner, I want to give a shout out to the three Michiganders on the Canes. Tim Gleason, Drayson Bowman, and Chad LaRose keep up making the mitten proud.
At just 19 years old, Jeff Skinner has accomplished quite a lot. He cracked an NHL line up at just 18 years old. He was the first 18 year old since Steve Yzerman to play in the All Star Game (suck on that Sid). Topping off a stellar year with winning the Calder Trophy makes the year I was 18 look rather lame. It's been covered many times that Jeff started his hockey career pulling double duty as a player and figure skater. Skinner was no slouch as a figure skater either. Seeing as he won the bronze medal at the 2004 Canadian Junior National Figure Skating Championships I would say that he might have a back-up plan career.
Jeff is the youngest of six children. SIX CHILDREN. His parents are lawyers. Now the interesting part is that three of his older sisters play or played college hockey as well as his older brother. Highly educated, hockey involved family. Now they don't or didn't just play for the local random community college leagues. No, no. They play or played for the likes of Cornell University and Harvard.
Now I always seem to find a Detroit connection somewhere along the way and I bet you're wondering where the Detroit connection is. Ever heard of the Detroit based law firm Dickinson Wright PLLC? The law firm that former Detroit mayor Dennis Archer was the chairman for? One of the partners in that firm happens to be Andrew Skinner. Who's Andrew Skinner? That would be Jeff's Dad. I've also been told that Jeff's older sister Andrea also is a lawyer for the firm. While the two don't practice out of Detroit, the company's headquarters as well as the majority of locations are in Detroit and scattered across the state.
