A collegiate success story

Edmonton Oilers

Shawn Horcoff

I harped on the Chicago Blackhawks and Duncan Keith for not finishing his college career and preached that collegiate athletic success stories do exist. Shawn Horcoff is one of those success stories. Shawn spent four years at Michigan State and completed his degree prior to starting his NHL career. Horcoff is no dummy. He was on the CCHA All-Academic Team two years running and received a degree in Math and Finance. Not only was Shawn successful off the ice but he also was successful on it as well. All in the 2000 season, Shawn received a nod to both the NCAA West First All-American Team and the CCHA First All-Star Team as well as the nods of CCHA Best Defensive Forward and CCHA Player of the Year. Now Shawn is the captain of the Edmonton Oilers, has a thriving NHL career, and also has a degree to fall back on in case anything should ever happen to his playing status. Collegiate success stories do exist.

And few random hits on Shawn:
  • Shawn Horcoff has the same condition as Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer. It's called heterochromia, a condition caused by the lack of or excess of melanin in the irises. This condition has resulted in Shawn having one brown eye and one green eye.

  • Shawn is close friends with Jason Bay of the New York Mets. The two both hail from Trail, British Columbia.
